During the years I was a reporter for a local television station, I had a chance to travel to several beautiful locations in “Naples of the Eastern World,” experiencing the best of the best. In my first English article in Living Kagoshima, I will share a “huge” story about an unmanned educational facility in Minamisatsuma City, the Hill of the Sleeping Whales, or as it is called in Japanese, Kujira no Nemuru Oka. This spot has become a renowned destination for curious visitors, offering a unique experience that blends nature, science, and Japanese culture.

Rescue operation for the stranding sperm whales（座礁マッコウクジラの救出活動）
The story dates back to January 2002, when 14 sperm whales (cachalots) were washed ashore on a nearby beach in the Oura area of Minamisatsuma City. It is known that sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predators on Earth. A female whale can measure approximately 11 meters, while a male 16 meters. Also, whales represent one of the most remarkable parts of the natural world. Most of the 14 whales were alive at the time of the stranding, so a desperate rescue operation was carried out in the stormy sea, watched over and cheered by locals, but only one was saved, and unfortunately, the rest of the sperm whales died. Still, it was rare that a giant whale was rescued from a stranding.
事の発端は2002年1月、南さつま市大浦地区の近くの海岸に14頭のマッコウクジラ（カシャロット）が打ち上げられたこと。 マッコウクジラはハクジラの中で最大であり、地球上で最大の歯のある捕食動物であることが知られています。 メスのクジラの体長は約11メートル、オスのクジラは約16メートルです。 また、クジラは自然界の最も注目に値する事象の1つです。
座礁時は14頭のクジラのほとんどが生存していたため、嵐の海の中、地元住民の見守りや声援を受けながら必死の救出活動が行われましたが、助かったのは1頭のみで、残念ながら残りのマッコウクジラは死亡しました。 それでも、巨大なクジラが座礁から救出されるのは珍しいことでした。
Even after the unfortunate matter, towing the whales‘ vast 20 to 40-ton bodies back to the sea was challenging. Usually, this is one of the methods to dispose of a whale carcass, so it can fulfill the proper post-mortem function of enriching the deep seafloor. A total of 254 tons of weight was used to sink the carcasses of the 12 whales. It took 11 days to complete this process. Only one of the dead sperm whales has been buried on the beach in a deep hole along the coastline to be dug up later. Researchers say that burying is not an ideal solution as it often causes significant bone damage.

Today, a whale skeleton can be one of the most iconic items in any museum’s collection – and a reminder of the fascinating history that lies behind it. However, you do not have to visit a museum to see one if you drop by the Hill of the Sleeping Whales in Minamisatsuma City on national highway no. 226. The city is located in the southwestern part of the Satsuma Peninsula, about 50km from the prefectural capital, Kagoshima City.
現在、クジラの骨格は、博物館のコレクションの中で最も象徴的なアイテムの1つであり、その背景にある魅力的な歴史を思い出させるものです。 しかし、南さつま市の国道226号線沿いにある「くじらの眠る丘」に立ち寄れば、博物館に行かなくても見ることができます。 国道226号は、薩摩半島の南西部に位置し、県庁所在地の鹿児島市から約50kmに位置します。
The Hill of the Sleeping Whales is a small monument built not far from the shore to express gratitude to those who participated in the vast rescue project in 2002, including government authorities, experts throughout Japan, and local people, and also to remember the 14 sperm whales and their rescue stories. The Hill of the Sleeping Whales showcases the sperm whale skeleton excavated after ten years of the terrible accident. Informative displays also provide valuable context about sperm whales and the importance of preserving marine ecosystems. Visitors can learn about whales’ anatomy, behavior, and ecological significance, further enhancing their understanding of the facility’s connection to these magnificent creatures.
「くじらの眠る丘」は、2002年の自治体、全国の専門家、地元住民など大規模な救出プロジェクトに参加した人々に感謝の意を表し、14体のマッコウクジラを偲ぶために海岸からほど近いところに建てられた小さな記念碑です。クジラとその救出の物語。「くじらの眠る丘」には、悲惨な事故から10 年後に発掘されたマッコウクジラの骨格が展示されています。 見るべきものが多い展示で、マッコウクジラと海洋生態系を保護することの重要性に関する貴重な情報も提供します。 訪問者はクジラの解剖学的構造、行動、生態学的重要性について学ぶことができ、この施設とこれらの素晴らしい生き物とのつながりについての理解を深めることができます。
Visiting the Hill of the Sleeping Whales is an experience that transcends ordinary sightseeing. It is very picturesque in May when moss phlox is usually in full bloom. Local shops and restaurants are also nearby. Admission to the unmanned educational facility is free of charge but lights go out at 8 pm. All are welcome to attend.
